Established in 1985, Friends of Hearst Castle is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cooperating association affiliated with Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, and the San Luis Obispo Coast District of California State Parks. Friends of Hearst Castle supports preservation and interpretation of Hearst Castle, including its art, artifacts, architecture and grounds through membership, education, outreach and special events. Friends' support helps to increase public access to, and appreciation of, this unique historical and cultural resource.
Friends of Hearst Castle is searching for an Executive Director. The Executive Director will have a leadership role in continuing support of the preservation and interpretation of Hearst Castle.
The Executive Director reports to the President of the Board of Directors of Friends of Hearst Castle.
The Executive Director is responsible for key duties including:
- Working with the Board of Directors to fulfill the organization’s mission
- Fundraising including grant writing
- Membership development
- Community outreach including social media and public relations campaigns
- Marketing the mission, memberships and events at Hearst Castle
- Administration of the office, employees and volunteers
- Event planning and execution
- Coordination with California State Parks staff.
The successful candidate will have a proven record of innovation, creativity, and leadership in developing and implementing successful fundraising programs, enlisting gifts from individual, corporate and foundation sources over a period of at least 5 years. Candidates will have demonstrated exceptional management and communications skills (both written and verbal), as well as the ability to work collaboratively. They will have proven ability in advocacy for the arts, history, and their preservation.
Candidates must also have strength in the primary areas of responsibility including marketing and public relations, financial management, event planning, nonprofit administration, team building with staff, volunteers, board members and the community. Candidates must have interpersonal skills to work harmoniously and effectively with community leaders, State Parks and Friends staff, donors, and volunteers. Experience within the State Parks community is desirable but not required.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Relocation assistance, if needed, is negotiable.
Preferred start date is September 2017.
Knowledge of the San Luis Obispo County community is desirable.
Some evening and weekend work is required. Some travel is required.
